Hanging Hearts Project

Hanging Hearts

For this dainty little wall hanging you will need:
  • 3 dark coloured background squares 8" long x 7 1/2" wide
  • light coloured fabrics for hearts
  • backing fabric
  • batting
  • fusible backing
  • motifs for heart centres cut from fabric scraps
  • ribbon
  • thread

What you do:

  • From your dark coloured fabrics cut 3 squares from dimensions above.
  • Cut 3 hearts measuring 6" long and 5 1/2" wide at widest out of co-ordinating fabrics
  • Apply fusible webbing to back of hearts, following package directions.
  • Center hearts on background squares carefully and fuse.

You can, at this point, also hand or machine stitch around the hearts using the buttonhole stitch. It is an option.

  • Now, choose 3 motifs that are about 1" - 1 1/2" in size to fuse to the center of your heart. This can be fun. I had a floral fabric, and I cut out single blooms and leaves and easily fused them to the centers of the hearts. Just make sure you keep the size in conjunction with the heart.
  • Join 3 squares together side by side with a straight machine stitch.
  • Cut backing fabric and batting same size as top.
  • Layer, top right side up, backing right side down and batting on top.
  • Cut 3 ribbon loops each about 4" long. Place raw edges of ribbon even with raw edges between top and backing. Pin one at either end and one in the middle.
  • Now sew around entire outer edge in 1/4" seam allowance and leave a 4" opening to turn.
  • Trim corners and excess bulk.
  • Turn and press gently.
  • Sew up opening and hang for everyone to admire.
