Quilting
Paper Piecing Technique
Fabric is sewn onto a paper pattern specially made for
this technique. The points come out sharp every time and
there is no matching of corners. It's not a technique for
someone making their first quilt, but if you have a little
experience you may find it lots of fun.
| Cut a
piece of fabric larger than
necessary. Hold the pattern up to
the light, and place the fabric
right side up over shape 1
on the wrong side of the pattern,
making sure there is at least 1/4
inch extra fabric all the way
around. Pin in place. |
 |
|
|
| Fold
on the line between shape 1 and
shape 2. Trim the fabric to ¼” of
the line. |

| Cut a
piece of fabric for shape 2,
making it larger than necessary
to overlap shape 2 by at least
1/4 inch all around. Place the
edge of fabric with right
sides together on top of
fabric 1. Pin along the seam line
between shape 1 and shape 2, and
open fabric 2 over shape 2. Hold
it up to the light and check to
see if fabric 2 overlaps all seam
lines of shape 2 by ¼”. If not,
readjust fabric 2 until it is in
place, then fold back over shape
1. |
 |
| Turn
paper side up, and sew the seam
between shape 1 and shape 2.
Remove pins. Fold foundation
along seam line and trim fabric 2
to ¼” from the sewn edge. Open
out and iron in place. |
 |
| Cut
fabric 3 larger than necessary.
Place right sides together
along trimmed edge of fabric 2.
Pin along seam line and open
fabric out, covering shape 3.
Hold up to light, and make sure
fabric 3 is larger than shape 3
by at least 1/4 inch on all
edges. Fold fabric 3 back over
fabric 2. Turn paper pattern
over, and sew along seam line
between shape 2 and shape 3.
Trim, open out and iron in place.
Continue in this manner until all
shapes are covered. The fabric
should cover the seam allowance.
Trim seam allowance to edge of
block. Leave paper in place until
the blocks are sewn together.
This keeps the blocks from
stretching out of shape during
sewing, and makes for more
accurate seams. |
