Fabric Requirements:

Dark blue: 5/8 yard or 0.5 meter
White: ½ yard or 0.4 meter
Orange: 12” square
Yellow: scraps
Black: 5/8 yard or 0.6 meter

Cutting Directions:

Cut a 16 ½” square of blue fabric for the background.
Cut four strips of black 3 ½” wide, and two strips 1 ½” wide.
Cut two strips of white 1 ½” wide.

Hand applique: Cut out the pattern pieces and trace them, upside down, on the wrong side of the colors marked on the pattern. Cut them out adding a ¼” seam allowance.

Iron-on applique: Cut out the pattern pieces and trace them, upside down, onto the paper covering on the double sided fusible webbing. Cut the pieces apart. Peel off the paper on the other side of the fusible webbing and attach to the appropriate colored fabric according to the directions on the webbing.

Sew the narrow black and white fabric strips together into sets of two strips, one black and one white. Cut into strips 1 ½” wide. halloween 1.gif (2253 bytes)
Sew the black and white fabric pieces into rows of alternating black and white squares. Two rows should have sixteen squares, and two should have eighteen squares. halloween 2.gif (1382 bytes)
Sew the two shorter pieces onto the blue square first, on opposite sides, making sure that one side starts with a white square and the other side starts with a black square. Then sew the longer pieces one, once again being sure to alternate black and white squares.
